InSensorART project two separate departments (MICAS and CS) of the will be involved for
specific activities here below described:

Department 1: The Microelectronics and Sensors (MICAS) is a division of the Department of Electrical
Engineering at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, Europe. The group is lead by 5
professors, supported by more than 30 Ph.D. researchers and 12 staff members for administration
and logistics. MICAS provides internationally recognized research and education in the field of
analog, RF, digital and mix ed-signal integrated circuit and sensor design at the highest scientific
standard. All aspects of microelectronics and sensor circuits are covered: on one hand software
(CAD) methods and tools are developed to increase design efficiency, on the other hand low power
analog, RF, digital and mixed signal IC circuits are designed. These are extensively used for sensor
interfaces, and biotelemetry for biomedical applications. On top of that, mechanical (MEMS) and
environmental sensors, embeddable on-chip, are produced in MICAS' own laboratories. This also
includes interconnection and hybrid assembly technologies, as well as packaging techniques to
yield fully implantable, biocompatible devices. The group has a unique expertise in the
development of biomedical microsystems, focusing on telemetry links for wireless power and data
transmission of in-vivo recorded sensor data. MICAS has been carrying out research in the field of
wireless powering and biotelemetry for more than 25 years and has been an active contributor in
many international projects. MICAS has been a very active player in the field of micro-implantable
monitoring devices. Among the successfully developed devices are liver pumps, bladder pressure
monitoring systems, foetal ECG monitoring systems.

A strong know-how has been built up through the years in the field of capsular endoscopy. The
MICAS group has been an active contributor in two recent European projects: IVP and VECTOR.
In both of them MICAS has been in charge for wireless power supply and data transmission. A
fully equipped measurement lab is available at MICAS, allowing circuits and systems
characterization ranging from DC to microwave frequencies.

Recent European projects where MICAS has been successfully involved are: ESPRIT 21245:
IMALP (Implantable microsystems for augmented liver perfusion); EG AIR 94-2304: (Intelligent
injectable capsules for temperature and movement monitoring with animals); EG IN20683I: FAME
(Food and animal monitoring expert); BIOMED CT 972173: STIMULUS (Smart total implant for
the monitoring of loosening), BNMED CT 2002-02442: IMLOAD (Improving implant fixation by
immediate loading), IST 2001-35169: IVP (Extracorporeal video probe), IST-033970 : VECTOR
(Versatile Endoscopic Capsule for Gastrointestinal Tumor Recognition and Therapy).

Department 2: The department for Cardiac Surgery   (KULeuven -CS)  is a clinical department
performing appr. 1200 heart operations per year. As a university department the main focus is on
complex procedures including congenital heart surgery and transplant surgery. The transplant
activity and its involved artificial heart program (VAD’s) is one of its main programs.   
The experimental research of the department is focused in three major areas: myocardial function,
heart valves and ventricular assist devices. As such the ventricular assist device research has lead to
the development of several clinical devices (Impella, Medos heart pump, Circulite assist device).
Previous projects focused on the development of mechanical support systems; the device – heart
interaction (infarct size reduction with mechanical support); the long-term effects of mechanical
support (myocardial remodelling during support); the biocompatibility of the devices (thrombo-
embolic events, blood damage, histopathology). Specific techniques:
- Well experienced animal model (sheep).
- Chronic animal housing for long-term instrumented and non-instrumented animals.
- Animal pathology by ex perienced pathologist (Prof Verbeken).
The department has an active assist device clinical program with 10 to 15 implants of chronic
devices per year. Patient care is organised with home discharge and supported with a dedicated
VAD-nurse to support patients in their home care.
